How to Know What God is Teaching You

There are multiple ways that God teaches us. Here’s how to know what God is teaching you – through your ordinary moments, His Word, and the struggles of your life. He desires that you might know His heart and ways and become the fullness of the YOUnique child of God He created you to be!

2 Peter 3:18 tells us to “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (NLT). How can you know what God is teaching you?

God has unique ways of teaching His children! When you get saved, you are enrolled in God’s school to learn His heart and ways. This school does not have your typical classroom setting, it is a very hands-on experience.

There are so many great things about living life WITH God! But God’s priority for you and I is not really our comfort, it is to make us like Jesus. As God’s children, we are to be shaped and molded into the image of His Son.

God uses every aspect of our lives to teach us more about Him! The everyday moments of life, God’s Word, and the pain and suffering in our lives are how we know what God is teaching us!

Romans 8:28-29 says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. For God knew His people in advance, and He chose them to become like his Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters” (NLT).

God is Teaching You in the Ordinary and Mundane Moments of Life

When we think of living the Christian life, we often think of God doing incredible things all the time—and He is! Sometimes, though, we can expect experiences with the Lord like when Moses received the 10 Commandments on the mountaintop to be how He teaches us every day. In reality, it is often in the mundane moments that God teaches us the greatest lessons.

Much of Jesus’ ministry was in the ordinary moments of life. Many times, in Scripture we read, “As Jesus passed by . . .” and it would always result in something amazing happening! Jesus and His disciples were simply going about their daily lives when opportunities and incredible moments of God’s teaching presented themselves.

Maybe you are working a desk job that you absolutely hate. Don’t underestimate what God is teaching you in those mundane moments. Not only does God want to teach you, He wants to use you, too.

Like Jesus, in your mundane moments, remember to see, stop, and spend time with people because there are people in every arena of life who need Jesus. Being willing to be taught in the mundane moments of life will ensure you can be used in the monumental moments of ministry.

God is Teaching You in His Word

Another way God is teaching you is through His Word. The Bible is the textbook for the Christian life. It is through the Scriptures that we learn God’s heart and ways. God’s Word shows us areas of our lives or hearts that need to be transformed by Him.

I know what you’re thinking. I just said God’s school is not your typical classroom setting, but this is sort of an exception. The Bible is a primary way God teaches you. Don’t worry, though, if you will ask Him and look for His Word to come alive in your life, God will make sure you get to really learn the principles you read about with up-close, real-life examples throughout your day!

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

To learn all God wants to teach us, we need to let the Word of God pierce our hearts like a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting away from our lives anything not of Him.

God is Teaching You through Pain & Suffering

My doctors gave me a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and said that I would never be able walk, talk or do anything. They said I would be in a wheelchair my entire life.

But, here I am, walking, talking, writing and serving the Lord!

I have had my fair share of struggles, but I consider Cerebral Palsy a blessing, not a burden. I have a platform to share my story and lead others to Christ. I can labor through my disability, not in spite of it.

Pain and suffering may be the most common and controversial method of how God teaches you. It is just like God to use something Satan meant to destroy the plan of God and turn it around for good. All of creation feels the sting of death, pain, suffering, and is longing for relief (Romans 8:23).

We all have things that we wish God would remove from us. The Apostle Paul had a “thorn in his flesh” that he prayed three times for God to remove, and each time, God said, no, “My grace is all you need” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

If God doesn’t remove the “thorn” in your flesh, He will use it as a tool for you to lean into Him more. He will use it for His glory (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Can I challenge you to be a Kingdom Laborer through your struggles? The Bible tells us that we can better relate to others when we have gone through the same struggles.

The everyday moments of life, God’s Word, and the pain and suffering in our lives are how we know what God is teaching us!

Hebrews 12:11 says, “No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of righteousness for those who are trained in this way” (NLT).

We have the hope of an eternity where we will see all the fruit of God’s teaching in our lives! Don’t miss out on the work that He is doing in you for eternity right now. God is teaching you in your ordinary moments, His Word, and the struggles of your life that you might know His heart and ways and become the fullness of the YOUnique child of God He created you to be!
