Scripture Focus:
Exodus 17:12 (NIV) — “When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.”
God has uniquely made and positioned each of us to do certain things that only we can do. And often the surprising part is not the calling itself, but this: He never meant for us to carry it on our own strength.
The Israelites were in a battle against the Amalekites, and God gave Moses a strange assignment. As long as Moses held his hands up toward Heaven, Israel prevailed in the fight below. This was his to do—no one could stand in his place. But his hands grew heavy, the way ours do in the middle of anything that matters, and he could not hold them up alone.
The good news is that he didn’t have to. Aaron and Hur were right there beside him. They put a stone under him to sit on and stood on either side, holding his hands steady until the sun went down. Moses kept doing what God had called him to do, but he did it held up by two people who had climbed the hill with him.
This is the gift of walking through life with others. They cannot take our place, but when our arms grow heavy, they can stand beside us and hold them up, and we get to do the same for them. We are steadier together than any of us could ever be alone.
Maybe you long for people like that and do not have them yet. That ache is worth bringing straight to God. You can ask Him for the kind of people who will stand beside you. It is a prayer He is glad to answer.
None of us were meant to hold our arms up alone. This is often how God keeps us going in what He has called us to: not by making us strong enough on our own, but by putting people on our left and our right.
