Slow Enough to Taste It

Scripture Focus:

Psalm 119:103 (NIV)“How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”

Most of us have finished a chapter of the Bible and realized we cannot remember a single thing we just read. Our eyes moved down the page, but nothing landed. We were reading to get through it—to check the box and get on with the day.

Time in the Word can easily become one more task in our day. When we read that way, we walk away holding information but missing the One the words were always meant to bring us closer to.

Notice how differently the psalmist talks about Scripture. He does not measure it by how much he read or what he figured out. He tastes it. Sweeter than honey, he says. This is an invitation to slow down long enough to truly enjoy the words and being with God as you read. The sweetness is the whole point.

There is another way to come to God’s Word. We can slow down and stay a while, giving Him room to speak into whatever we are carrying that day. The closeness we long for with God is often built in exactly this kind of slow, quiet time. Not in the chapters we rush through, but in the verses we sit with long enough to taste. We do not have to finish. We do not have to leave with a lesson every time. We get to slow down, enjoy the God who is speaking, and trust that He is making something deep in us stronger while we do.

Weekly Challenge:

This week, pick one short passage and read it slowly, more than once. Let the words sit with you. Stay long enough to enjoy them, and to enjoy being with God there.
