Junk Drawer

We had some friends over for dinner! We were excited to gather with their family and young children. We enjoyed a great meal, games together, and loved hearing the kids play and run and squeal through the house.

Sometime after dinner, the children decided they wanted to do some more exploring! They began opening the drawers of the end tables and coffee tables to look for exciting new treasures.

Their mother looked over and said, “Please stop going through their things! That is not polite!” The little girl, cute as can be, said, “But Mom, it’s nothing. It’s just a junk drawer!”

I laughed out loud and said, “She is absolutely right!” It is a junk drawer full of old magazines and cookbooks! I still laugh about that moment. Junk drawers are a funny thing, aren’t they? Do you have one? It’s probably hard to even know what all is in it!

It can sure be easy to accumulate stuff. One minute we are holding it in our hand thinking we will one day need this or use it, and quickly find a drawer to put it in to get it out of the way and off the counter, but available for when we need it. Suddenly, the drawer becomes filled with random things such as rulers, old phone cords, cough drops, batteries, highlighters, and forever stamps for the United States Postal Service that look so old we can begin to question if they will still work to mail a letter!

Then one junk drawer becomes two or a collection of junk drawers or cabinets that have all kinds of weird and random things in them that we still think we will need one day! There is a reason businesses like 1-800-GOT-JUNK exist! Stuff accumulates. Don’t worry if you have a junk drawer—you are not alone! Stats say 95% of Americans have at least one junk drawer, and oddly enough, over 90% use theirs several times per week. It sounds like, we got junk, and we know where to find it! I know I sure do! Well, I know I have got junk, but I’m not sure if I could quickly find it if I needed it!

The junk drawer helps junk to be out of sight and out of mind! It’s easy to forget about it when we aren’t faced with it on the counter every day.

No one loves to open up their junk drawer in front of others. It’s hidden for a reason. There is a time when spring cleaning is appropriate, even if it’s not spring. There is a time to clean house and declutter.

I was reminded of God’s Scripture recently in Matthew 6:19-21, which says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (ESV).

Luke 12:15 says, “…Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (ESV).

These verses are addressing more than our simple junk drawers. They address where our true treasures can be found! Whether or not you have completed or attempted spring cleaning this year, it may be time to consider a fresh start today. This not only holds true for our physical house, but for our spiritual house as well. It can be easy to compartmentalize and carry things with us that need to be cleaned up!

Have you checked your junk drawers lately? Those that may be in your home and also in your spiritual life—like hurts and unforgiveness that you haven’t properly dealt with? Have you been collecting a few things that need to be evicted? I believe the enemy loves to help you fill the junk drawers of your life, and the Lord would love nothing more than to help you clean them out!
