Later, Scott explained “Fore” to me in further detail letting me know it was the common warning yelled out by golfers to alert people nearby of a golf ball that is going awry and flying in their direction. It was a warning to take cover! Warnings are only helpful when you know what they are for! How was someone yelling “Fore” going to help me if I didn’t even know what it means?
Fore is meant to forewarn you of what is headed your way. I learned more than just about the warnings that day. I learned about Mulligans, or a do-over shots, which I needed many of! And I learned the difference in the clubs of irons, woods, wedges, hybrids, and putters and all the different gear and equipment needed to help add a little assistance to your golf game! It was quite the learning curve!
All of you amazing golfers out there have this game down to a science! You know when to use your driver and when to pull out the 3, 5, or 7 fairway woods to gain more loft. You know the difference in your long, mid, and short irons when you are approaching the green. You know just which wedge to pull out of your golf bag when you are in a bunker, and you usually have a tried-and-true putter that will help you get the ball into the hole on your final shot! It’s interesting how many tools are available to help you improve your game!
Are you ready to take on the situations of life with such precision? “FORE!” When life throws unexpected curveballs at you, do you know how to respond? Do you know the warning signs?
Paul warned Timothy of the godlessness that would happen in the latter days. In a way, he was yelling, “FORE!” In other words, watch out! He affirmed that Timothy should continue in what he had learned. He pointed him to the importance of the Scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 says, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (ESV).
All Scripture is God-breathed and helps us to be complete and equipped for every good work.
“FORE!” Most golfers would not attempt to putt on the green with their driver or make a 450-foot drive with their putter! You need the appropriate clubs for the game.
I wonder if sometimes we fumble our way through life’s circumstances and situations with all the hazards, bunkers, and penalty areas because we haven’t been armed with the Word of God.
Do we practice being in the Word of God? Do we know God’s Word?
Do we understand that it will help us in all situations? Do we know it equips us for every good work?
FORE! Warning. Have you heeded God’s Word? How can you live beyond a game and equip yourself with God’s living Word? Will you practice reading the Word of God out loud? Will you listen to the Bible app and allow it to read the Scriptures out loud to you through the audio Bible? Will you memorize a Scripture this week? Will you handwrite a Scripture on paper. Extra time in His Word this week will continue to set you up for success. Don’t just settle for par. Shoot for an ace or a hole-in-one as you follow God’s lead and obey His standards! You’ve got this. Learn to be a professional disciple!
