8 Ways You Can Help Finish The Great Commission

Whenever I am watching a movie, and a character is giving his last words from his death bed, I lean in to listen carefully. The last words of a person on this planet are usually very important. We should all pay close attention to the last words of our loved ones. How much more the last words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?

Matthew 28:18-20 are some of the last words that Jesus said before He left Earth. He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This is called the Great Commission. I am afraid at times that we treat it more like the Great Omission. I remember when I first got saved, I would talk to everyone about Jesus. I would even confuse a stop sign for a person with a big head. I did not realize then that I was supposed to be more complacent about evangelism.

However, through time, I have noticed that I have strayed some from my first love. Therefore, I believe that the first step to achieving the goal of finishing the Great Commission is revival in our hearts.

#1 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Revival in Your Heart

Revival happens when someone realizes that their sins have offended Jesus deeply and they repent and surrender (or re-surrender) their lives to Jesus as Lord and Savior. Have you left your first love?

Return to Him today!

You can pray a prayer like this or put it in your own words:

“Lord, I am coming back to You as my first love. I am sorry for my sin and wandering and ask for Your forgiveness. Thank You for paying the price for my sin on the cross and rising from the dead. I freshly surrender everything I am to You again! Jesus, all I have and all I am is Yours. Will You restore me back to an intimate relationship with You?”

Another way to help us finish the Great Commission is to understand the benefit of doing so. Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

#2 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

When the whole world hears of Jesus, the wedding of Jesus and His Bride, the Church, is around the corner. We can hasten the coming of Christ by fulfilling the Great Commission. We are getting closer every day with more and more missionaries from around the world going to unreached people groups.

#3 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Take the Gospel to Unreached People Groups

Maybe the Lord would call you to take this message to unreached people groups. Forge has several opportunities to participate in this endeavor through Forge Global. You can read the latest updates and learn more here

Romans 10:14-15 gives us even more options to help with the worldwide endeavor to finish the Great Commission: “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of who they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News!”

There are three types of people crucial to these verses:

  1. First, there are lost people who have never believed.
  2. Second, there are preachers who tell them about Jesus.
  3. Last, there are people who financially support the preachers to go tell the lost about Jesus.

We should be one or both of the last two groups, going and giving!!!

#4 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Giving to Send Others

What is our responsibility for completing the task of world evangelization? If you are called by God to go to the unreached people groups of the world, then you will have a burning desire to do so. If you are not called to go, then you should know that your responsibility does not stop there. You are called to send others!

#5 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Share Jesus Wherever You Are

Whether you are called to the mission fields overseas or not, you do not become a missionary when you get on the plane. You have to be one before you go. First, study the Bible and other resources on how to share your faith. You are going to need to practice several times. Memorize as many techniques as you can.

I am not very smart, but I have memorized 17 different techniques for sharing the Gospel. I have written two techniques that are my very own based on my personality. If you are not called to the oversees mission fields, you are still called to evangelism. I have a friend who could not speak to a crowd, but she can cook. She led several ladies in her neighborhood to Jesus because she would have them over for baked goods and coffee. Everyone has something to offer others!!!

One of the secrets of completing the Great Commission is figuring out what your gifts are, and then using them to bring others to Jesus.

#6 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Use Your Unique Gifts to Bring Others to Jesus

At Forge, this is called Laboring for Christ. Jesus gave us a prayer request: We are to ask Him to raise up more laborers for the harvest. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few (Matthew 9:35-39).

Everyone who reads this can be a laborer. One of the heart cries of a laborer is the Great Commission. A laborer has a heart for prayer. I believe that prayer is one of the great missing ingredients in this effort.

#7 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Pray

Recently, I was speaking at a conference in the Middle East. Missionaries from all over were attending this very well-protected event. I was preaching on repentance and told the missionaries that sin would block our efforts for the Great Commission in people’s hearts.

At the invitation, the ground started to shake, and several things fell off the tables. I asked my interpreter what was happening, and he said it was an earthquake. I asked if they had them often there, and he said never. Then, he said it was the power of God.

After the time of repenting was over, the people started to scream out in joy, and the dancing began. They danced until well after midnight. What does this have to do with prayer? They all got up the next morning at 4 AM and started praying again. Just a couple of hours of sleep and they were back. I will never forget it. Prayer is the work!!!

#8 Way You Can Help Finish the Great Commission: Let Passion Make the Way

The last principle concerning completing the Great Commission is passion. Passion comes from the Latin word “patri”, which means to suffer. That is why they call it the Passion of the Christ. It is the suffering of the Christ.

Passion still means that today. For example, some women love to shop. I hate shopping. I call it suffering, but others call it entertainment. Passion makes suffering look like entertainment. Some guys like sports and they will bleed willingly for their sport. That is passion.

Why are there so few people passionate for Jesus? I believe that the secret to completing the great commission is going to have to be passion for Christ. Passion will make you do crazy things for Jesus.

Passion will spur you on to speaking publicly about Jesus to anyone you encounter.

Fear is Not Your Enemy!

The number one fear in the world is public speaking. But you must understand that fear is not your enemy. Actually, fear is one of our best allies in this battle to finish the Great Commission. Without fear, there is no boldness. Boldness helps you go through fear.

Fear makes you prepare better to share your faith. Fear makes you pray more for the results. Fear is your ally. Paul came to the Corinthian Church with much fear and trembling in 1 Corinthians 2:3.

All of Heaven is Behind You!

Lean in on the last words of Jesus again. He said to go and make disciples. We should listen carefully because he says that ALL AUTHORITY is His. All authority is not ours; it is His!!! He spoke with authority and commanded us to tell the world about Jesus.

Start in your own world, and then spread out. When you speak anything about Jesus to anyone else, you have all the authority of heaven behind you! You go in Jesus’ authority. You might not believe in yourself, but He believes in you! The way I like to say it is that I am a toothpick duct-taped to a lead pipe!!!

You plus Christ are always the victor!!! You can help finish the Great Commission!
