Breakfast Burritos

In this season of my life, you may find me shedding a tear or two. It may even be over a breakfast burrito—not because of the burrito or jalapenos, but the conversation happening around the table filled with the burritos.

My tears are coming from a place of thankfulness and gratitude. I have been kindly asked to warn people in advance when I am speaking! My tears just do not have an on and off switch.

I have been more tender since surrendering my life to God at age 27. I have never forgotten the deep, dark pit the Lord pulled me out of. Even though by my measures and standards I was a “good person,” or by the world’s standards a “good citizen,” I was still a sinner far from God. The truth is: our standards never measure up to God’s standards. When we finally understand our need for Jesus and how much He truly did for us, it can melt a heart of stone.

I have tried to stay tender and thankful before the Lord. Yes, there are moments like weddings, the birth of a child, celebrations, milestones, and even loss that can open the floodgates of tears, but mere thankfulness can too.

Experiencing God in even greater levels at the Asbury Revival of 2023 felt like it opened a reservoir of tears damned up that I didn’t know I had. It doesn’t take much to make me cry. At times, just hearing, saying, or reading the name of Jesus will have me running for tissues.

I have been invited to share my personal Asbury Revival experience with many people—men and women alike all over the country. I have shared my experience one on one, in church services, board rooms, on radio and tv programs, and even with a group of Christian leaders, pastors, and businessmen. I remember that occasion very well. It was the first time I was invited to speak to a group of only men just outside of downtown. I wrestled for weeks wondering what the Lord would have me share about my personal revival experience from Asbury. I prayed often asking God for His guidance and strength. I prepared my notes and testimony, and then the morning came!

On my way to the meeting, I continued to pray as I was driving. Suddenly, I had a very keen awareness that I was to revisit John 4 in the Bible. I opened my Bible at the stoplight and my eye was drawn to John 4:28-30, which says, The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?’ Then they went out of the city and came to Him” (NKJV).

I knew I had my clear marching orders as I was driving into the city. I was to share with these men about the Man who told me all the things I ever did. I was to share my testimony of the call to repentance yet again at Asbury 22 years after my surrender to God. There were things I was carrying in my heart that were hidden that I was unaware of. Positioning myself in a posture of full surrender before the Lord allowed Him to expose the hidden places.

The Lord was not asking me to present a polished sermon to these men, but rather my passionate encounter with God.

I knew there was one more step. I was not to ask them, “Can this be the Christ?” Rather, I was on mission to boldly proclaim, “He is the Christ!” I rested in that. I knew my assignment was to share the work of God in my life at Asbury, and in conclusion declare, “He is the Christ!”

That’s exactly what I did. Did I cry? Of course. Did they cry? Surprisingly, yes. The room was filled with snot and tears. It was a men’s group. There were no boxes of tissues laying around. There were breakfast burritos on the tables, wrapped in a simple paper towel. Instead of reaching for tissues, everyone was reaching to unwrap breakfast burritos to get their hands on something to wipe the tears on besides their shirtsleeves. It was nothing I did. It’s what He did! The Holy Spirit moved in hearts again and revealed the hidden places that needed to see the light.

Only Christ and the work of His Holy Spirit can expose our deepest darkest sin and wash us clean and change us for eternity.

In a world so filled with questions and a great number of young and old, men and women alike still searching for Truth trying to fill the holes in their heart with everything but God, we as Christians need to take a stand and declare—The Messiah is “the Lord Jesus Christ who takes away the sins of the world!”

Later we read, in John 4:39-42:

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed because of His own word. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world (NKJV, italics mine).

When we tell others our testimony, it helps lead them to Jesus. When they meet Jesus for themselves, they indeed know the Savior of the World!

Revelation 12:11 declares, And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” (NKJV).

When is the last time you have shared your testimony? Who have you shared your God-Stories with? Is there someone God has put on your heart? Get creative and set up a time to meet! Maybe take them out for breakfast burritos! What are you waiting for? Please share your story with the world around you and be sure to introduce them to Jesus who is the Christ! Don’t forget to take a few extra tissues! You just may need them!
